Ranbir Kapoor thanks Arun Govil for shaping generations; credits him for inspiring Lord Rama vision

At the Pratham Sankalp launch in New Delhi, where the first trailer of Nitesh Tiwari’s new film adaptation of the Ramayana was unveiled, Ranbir Kapoor took a moment to honour a figure who has become synonymous with Lord Rama for many viewers – Arun Govil. The veteran actor thanked Govil for the way he has shaped generations’ perception of the deity through his portrayal in the 1980s television series directed by Ramanand Sagar.

During the event, Kapoor explained that he was wearing black sunglasses because he had been diagnosed with conjunctivitis and wanted to prevent spreading the infection. He then delivered an emotional tribute to Govil, saying, “You have carried this responsibility for years with such grace, authenticity, and dignity. Your journey has been an inspiration—not just to actors like me, but to everyone who has watched Ramanand Sagar’s Ramayan. You have instilled faith and inspired them. If I could embody Lord Shri Ram within myself even a fraction as well as you have, I would consider my hard work truly successful and fruitful. I have grown up carrying Lord Shri Ram’s blessings and teachings—along with your face—in my heart. We love you as one of our own.” The Hindi message was translated into English for the audience.

Govil’s return to the Ramayana universe is in the role of King Dashrath, and his presence alongside a star‑studded cast underscores the film’s ambition. Ranbir Kapoor leads the project as Lord Rama, while Sai Pallavi plays Goddess Sita. Yash makes his Bollywood debut as Ravana, and Sunny Deol takes on the powerful role of Lord Hanuman. The ensemble also features Ravi Dubey as Lakshman, Lara Dutta as Kaikeyi, Rakul Preet Singh as Surpanakha, Kajal Aggarwal as Mandodari, Vivek Oberoi as Vidyutjihva, Kunal Kapoor as Lord Indra, Adinath Kothare as Bharat, and Mohit Raina in an unspecified role.

The Pratham Sankalp event highlighted the film’s commitment to bringing the epic story to life with a blend of veteran talent and fresh faces. Kapoor’s tribute to Govil not only paid homage to a cultural icon but also reinforced the enduring influence of the original television series on contemporary cinema and audiences alike.
